Sleep - A Cavatina
A cavatina-- buzzing, humming, drumming -- a cavalcade swallowing consciousness,
Overcome in a rush -- thoughts swirling, twirling, tumbling without cause
Into the tumult: the humdrum voice of a hundred thousand men and women --
Voices are not my own.
Wave after wave--
Exhaustion pounding out the backbeat of a heartbeat; it's another heartfelt day
And I lose myself in its embrace -- these virgin thoughts raped by images -- violated
By the thousands -- they ran before me.
And in the silence, and in the private thoughts-- lies
A quiet escape from the need to understand, the desire to comprehend -- lost in the discovery
In a complex world of dreams,
I sleep.
In a complex world of dreams,
I sleep.
